Amy Hanson started writing her novel, a braided narrative about
a woman in Zambia and a woman in Seattle, when her third child was a
year and a half. Not the ideal time to take on a book project, as she
says. She'd always enjoyed writing, although music had been her focus,
but she'd gotten letters from people who had read small things she'd
written, asking if she'd ever thought about writing a book. An idea for
a novel was in her head, and so she decided to just try.
